Leaving The Hospital
Almost all patients are sent home within two hours of their parathyroid operation. You will be sent home when you are ready to go and after one or more of the doctors has said goodbye and has reviewed your photo with you and discussed the operation. So keep your photo out because the doctors will want to chat about it with you. NOTE, almost everybody gets a photo, but some do not for various technical reasons.
At TGH, your nurse will call your hotel shuttle for you. If you valet parked, your nurse will call down and get the car brought around for you. By rule, all patients are taken out to their car (or shuttle, or Uber) in a wheelchair, so get prepared for one more ride!
You can read more about how and when you will be discharged from the hospital in the yellow “Day of Surgery” section of the app. If you have heart troubles, bleeding problems, or required a larger operation, you may be kept overnight in the hospital, but this is very uncommon. Only about one person every 2 months will need to spend the night—this is about 1 in every 700-800 people. However, safety always trumps convenience.
Time for a nap!
Almost everybody wants to take a nap when they leave the hospital and typically this is a 2-hour nap. When you awake from the nap you should feel pretty good. Almost everybody goes out for dinner the night of surgery, but if your operation was later in the day, you may just want a light dinner and relax. We have lots more about this in the yellow “Day of Surgery” section of the app.
Don’t check out of the hotel in the morning.
This is a change with the virus! If you are staying at one of our hotels, DO NOT check out in the morning. Tell the hotel you are having surgery with the Norman Parathyroid Center and ask for a late checkout (they will probably give you until 2:00 or even 3:00 pm). Since your family can’t stay at the hospital with you due to the new virus rules, they can stay at the hotel and have a place to leave their things and a place to relax while waiting for you.
